Commander Christopher Ferguson, Pilot Douglas Hurley, and Mission Specialists Sandra Magnus and Rex Walheim rode a vehicle whose silhouette had become as familiar as any airliner’s, yet whose flight regime belonged to no category pilots encounter in ordinary cockpits. According to NASA’s STS-135 mission page, the crew’s primary cargo was the Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module, packed with more than 8,000 pounds of food, equipment, and spare parts destined for the International Space Station. For twelve days, eighteen hours, twenty-seven minutes, and fifty-six seconds—nearly thirteen days by any human measure—Atlantis and its crew kept station with the orbiting laboratory. NASA’s mission press kit framed STS-135 as both a logistics run and a technology demonstration. Magnus and Walheim, working with station astronauts, conducted the Robotic Refueling Mission, testing tools and techniques that might one day allow satellites in orbit to be serviced robotically rather than written off when propellant ran low. The broader shuttle program had carried 833 crew members into orbit, deployed satellites, repaired the Hubble Space Telescope, and built the largest structure ever assembled off the planet. STS-135 did not end American human spaceflight; astronauts would continue aboard Soyuz spacecraft and, eventually, commercial crew vehicles.
